THE DEPARTMENT OF AQUACULTURE

The department is a leading research center in Aquaculture and since 1993 designated as the center for Arctic charr research in Iceland. The college has a fish farm which has access to geothermal water and is equipped both for research and instruction in the field of Aquaculture. The college has formal collaboration agreements with several universities and institutions in Iceland and abroad.

Aims of the program:

To educate people for employment in Aquaculture and sustainable harvesting of freshwater fish in Iceland.

To prepare people for establishing and managing Aquaculture enterprises.

Fields of study:

The biology and ecology of fresh water and sea water fish. The husbandry of fish, food production and marketing of Aquaculture products. Business management and economy: Economics and management, book keeping, tax issues and legal requirements. The use of computers for word processing and financial management.

Supervised practical work experience: Students are required to complete a twelve week practical term at a selected fish farm under the supervision of a manager or owner, as well as with supervision from the college. Student performance is evaluated on three criteria and a student may not fail any of the criteria in order to complete the practical term.

Entrance requirements:

Applicants must have completed 65 credits at secondary college level or equivalent.

Credits:

The program totals 68 credits. Students graduate with a diploma of Agriculture in Aquaculture Technology.

Graduate work and research:

Opportunities exist for graduate students to conduct research projects in collaboration with universities. Opportunity for visiting scholars to conduct research.

Aquaculture course descriptions

The aim of the program is to provide education in Aquaculture and the use of freshwater fish in Iceland. An emphasis is placed on management, biology of fish, food production and marketing. The program is both academic and practical. Graduates of the program should be able to direct and manage production on a fish farm.

The program of study is closely related to the research program in Aquaculture at the college. Most instructors are simultaneously employed in research and development.
