B.Sc. in Aquaculture

Bachelor (BSc) in Aquaculture is a joint degree programme offered by the University of Akureyri and Hólar University. Students register through University of Akureyri and take courses at both institutions each semester, following a shared curriculum. Please note that most of the program is in Icelandic.

The programme is offered as on-campus or distance learning at the University of Akureyri, and as distance learning with on-site study periods at Hólar University. It is organised as a flexible programme, with no requirement for daily on-campus attendance. Students are, however, required to attend designated study periods, which focus on project work and academic discussion. Between study periods, coursework and assignments are completed and submitted electronically, and active participation during on-site sessions is required.

The bachelor program in Aquaculture is a demanding and dynamic undergraduate programme that provides a strong foundation for careers in one of Iceland’s fastest-growing sectors. Graduates acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed for specialised positions in aquaculture facilities and companies working in land-based farming, sea-cage aquaculture, seaweed and kelp cultivation, shellfish farming, and related fields.

The programme is grounded in the natural sciences, with biology, chemistry, and mathematics forming its core. It emphasises close links to industry and real-world projects within the aquaculture sector.

Students choose between two areas of specialisation:

  • Biotechnology
  • Fisheries Science

Specialised aquaculture courses are taught at Hólar University, while courses in biotechnology or fisheries science are delivered by the Faculty of Natural Resources at the University of Akureyri. This structure provides students with a comprehensive perspective on the aquaculture value chain, from biology and production to operations and markets.
