Sustainable Rural Development

The collaborative master programme in Sustainable Rural Development is a research-based master programme offered by Hólar University and University of Iceland. The courses on offer are thought in both universities. The aim of the study is to educate individuals for work in the field of sustainable rural and community development in rural areas, both in Iceland and abroad or to pursue PhD studies.
The master programme is 120 ECTS, thereof 30 or 60 ECTS research project. Students needs a BA/BSc/B.ed degree with a minimum average grade of 6,5 or equivalent education to be accepted to the programme. Students will select between 30 or 60 ECTS research project in their field, which has to have a connection to rural development, but 60 ECTS project gives admission to a doctoral study.
The programme is offered as a full-time or part-time distance learning study programme. Students have to attend on-site course once in a semester. Electives are offered both as distance learning courses or on-site courses. Some of the electives at Hólar University are offered half a semester (6-7 weeks) while manditory courses and other electives are offered the whole semester.
